Rays and MTB and BMX

Ah, yes, the latest in my series of once-every-year-or-so posts.

Lately, I've been living in Cleveland and working as a biologist. I still ride bikes, but not as often as I should. Most of my rides recently have been to/from the bar, or at Ray's indoor MTB park.

On the bright side, I'm actually faster than my boyfriend on our bar sprints. (It's always fun to be the faster one, but especially when you're a girl.) On the...not so bright side, I usually get my ass handed to me at Ray's.

If you live in the midwest (or maybe even farther afield) and you're at all into mountain biking or bmx, you're bound to have heard of Ray's at one point or another. It's an awesome, huge, complex, and sometimes downright scary (at least for someone with my technical skills) indoor mountain bike park.

We live 10 minutes away. That really says enough, right? In order to take advantage of this fact, we've added a new pony to the stable. This makes four bikes now in our very small apartment. (The other three include my Cannondale cx and singlespeed beater, and Dan's spiffy new All City singlespeed cx.)

Dan (or TrainerDan™ as like to refer to him on this blog) in the Transferland room at Ray's

Dan is pictured instead of me because I don't look badass doing any of this stuff, whereas he can actually do most of the things there. We have somewhat different philosophies when it comes to riding: he's great at the quick sprints and tricky technical things, whereas my strength lies in being able to hold onto a fast wheel mile after mile.

Anyway, I'm beginning to think a membership at Ray's might be good for me. Already I've improved in some of the technical areas I'm lacking. Plus, I'm a fraidy cat and I need to not be. A lot of it comes down to simply telling myself to grow a pair of ovaries, and then proceeding to do so. Plus, Dan already has a membership there, and we all know I'm a jealous creature by nature.
